"I don't know why and I'm not yet motivated to fix it since my views on esd are mostly unprintable."
- Alan Cox

We love our fanboys.

Not only from one, but TWO blogs we picked up on this comment.

"Audacious doesn't support MOD files out of the box. When XMMS came out, MP3's didn't even EXIST!"

That's simply hillarious. As much as we love our fans, I can only say this OMGWTFLOLBBQKORV! Yeah mp3s existed when the project was started, take a wild guess why the project was started and from what player we borrowed the gui and what that player was designed for.

No news.

DING DONG, IT'S APRIL 27TH AND ALL IS QUIET.

I would like to take the opportunity to say hello to my mother, Hi mother!

In other news there are no news. And as such, I have no reason whatsoever to actually press 'Add Post'.

But.. since we're a nifty old cool gtk+1 application, we have to be insane to actually keep this site up. We SHOULD hide xmms on a obscure japaneese ftp server and you can all go ftpsearch.. oh, I guess we outlived ftpsearch, never mind.

My slippers are gone. Please find them.

XMMS2 Development Release 1

Our sister project XMMS2 has now reached Developer Release 1. The target audience for this release is developers, the player is NOT yet ready for public consumption or for replacing XMMS1, RythmBox, AmaroK or MPD. This simply means that the codebase is very nice and developers are encouraged to help creating plugins and clients that will make XMMS2 the de facto standard for music playing, like XMMS1 has been for almost a decade. At this point there are no mature and stable GUI clients, but this preview is released in the hope that the development of interfaces will accelerate. Read more about the XMMS2 project on http://wiki.xmms2.xmms.se.

This does not imply the end of XMMS1, we will continue to work on XMMS1 and are still very much interested in more developers and patches. Please drop by any of the channels we occupy on irc.freenode.net either #xmms or #xmms2.

Please note that XMMS and XMMS2 are two seperate projects and thus, do not report xmms2 bugs on the xmms bugzilla, and don't report xmms bugs on the xmms2 mantis :)

See you around.

Updated XMMS 1.2.9 rpms for Fedora Core 1

The XMMS 1.2.9 rpms we built for Fedora Core 1 had an unnecessary dependency on ALSA (libasound.so.2 in particular). We have now build new rpms that don't have this problem.

New website

So we've finally had our facelift. I'm still reworking the database backend so there's bound to be a couple of bugs left on the site to weed out. Please drop me a mail if you find anything that's broken.

The main server is still offline and we would really appriciate it if you could sponsor the admin with a small donation to help him get the machines back up. Use the paypal link below to submit your contribution.

Main server down

Our main server has suffered a hd meltdown and is currently being rebuilt. This affects skin downloads and the ftp. We would like to ask for help to bring the server back as quickly as possible. The system admin would appriciate if anyone of our visitors have some hardware to spare.

Our wishlist: some fresh new SCSI drives, either 68pin ones or if possible a few 80pin (SCA) hotswap disks and a nicebackplane/drive cage. It's important that the drives are new, so it'll take longer until it fails.

To send in donations to the server admin (in norway), contact Dag Stenstad (donate at stenstad.net)

The skin pages will remain offline, since the server we're currently running off don't have the capacity for all those downloads.

Database updates

I'm currently reworking most of the databases, so for the time being all access to the skin pages, plugin comments and guestbook have been disabled. They should be back soon enough, but it might be a couple of days. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Website updates

So, after a long time having the page down (and a couple of days with boredom) most of the site has been recoded to work in a much more sane enviroment rather than the hack of a page it previously was.

bugs.xmms.org is back online aswell thanks to Håvard.

If you spot any broken links on our site, please report them to me. Just remember to report where I can find the broken link, since just giving me the broken url don't do me much good since I have limited time where I can work on the pages nowadays.

Attacks/Broken pages

We've decided to move the site over to a new machine and more bandwidth. Due to the recent attacks against our administrator the machines which where we're hosted are in a terrible mess. The bugzilla doesn't work like it should due to broken perl dependecies etc. We hope you'll have the patience to wait for us to work things out. We'll hopefully begin to move the sites over to the new machine within a week.

Lots of new / updated plugins.

New additions:
Highly Experimental 0.0.3
This is a port of Neill Corlett's Highly Experimental Winamp plugin for XMMS for i386-based Linux machines. It is a binary only release, and is distributed with no warranty or guarantee whatsoever. Currently it can read and emulate .psf files. It is able to read tag information from files, and it has basic support for MiniPSF and PSFLib files.

EQ Graphical Equalizer 0.4
EQ is a realtime graphical equalizer that will equalize everything that you are playing through XMMS, not just the MP3s.

CXMMS 0.4.7
CXMMS is a little control program for XMMS to control it from the command line. Optionally it's have an Slang/ncurses control screen.

SNESAmp for XMMS
SNESAmp is a plugin for Winamp that emulates SPC files (sound format used in the Super NES). It is full featured and extremely fast, being written almost entirely in assembly. Now it is avaliable to Linux fans (and potentially fans of other Intel-based UNIXes as well) as an input plugin for XMMS, the X Multimedia System.

XMMS mp3cue 0.9
XMMS mp3cue is a plugin that allows you to use XMMS to conveniently navigate through large (or small) audio files. mp3cue can store information related to smaller tracks at specified locations within a single audio file and allows you to select and play any of them conveniently.

CDcover 0.2
CDCover is a plugin for xmms, which displays a graphic dependent on the currently played song. Normal usage would be to display the CD covers for the different songs. The graphics are retrieved from your computer. Therefore searchpaths can be defined, where a corresponding cover is searched for.
Features:

* Define as many different search paths as you need, including wildcards
* Buildin skin, full support for custom skins
* Many different graphic formats (supported formats depend on your gtk installation)
* Automatically resizes the images, and preserves aspect-ratio upon request

CoverViewer 0.1.4
It is a plugin for XMMS, whose main task is to display images: it scans the directory containing the file you are playing, and all the jpeg found will be displayed in the window (in the future I'll add other images probably) It can be a copy of the cover of the album, but why not putting some photos of penguins, so you can have a nice and relaxing slideshow while listening your favourite music? It also try to found the title of the song played, using tags (if it does'nt, it just read the title from xmms) and display it. It creates a personalised skin using the xmms-skin, so your display still look the way you like it. You have buttons (play, pause, etc...) So if you want to minimize xmms and just keep coverviewer, you have all control on the song!

Dumb-XMMS 0.1
DUMB-XMMS is an input plug-in that enables XMMS to use DUMB to play IT, XM, S3M and MOD files. In terms of the interface it is very bare: you can't view the song message or sample names or even the title. However, it is much more accurate than the existing MikMod plug-in or even the ModPlugXMMS plug-in.
Here are the main features of the playback engine:

- Accurate support for low-pass resonant filters for IT files
- Click removal (no volume ramps; music doesn't sound muffled!)
- Fast, accurate seeking: all notes will be present and correct at all times

DUMB is a Freeware library primarily intended for use in games (which is why it currently lacks the ability to read author information).

Updated:
XMMS Album List 0.6, UADE 0.80-pre4, SingIt 0.1.25, XMMS-KDE 3.1beta1, Nebulus 0.5.0, Goodnight 0.3.2, Xmms Alarm 0.3.3, XOSD 2.2.0, XMMS InfoPipe 1.3, xmmspipe 0.5.1 and XMMS Crossfade 0.3.1

A couple of days ago, the person hosting the XMMS mailinglist decided to put his server to other use, and thus taking the mailinglist offline. I've contacted him about it, and I should get the subscriber information soon enough so we'll hopefully have the mailinglist back soon.

I will soon replace the aged forum which is starting to fall apart with newer versions of libraries and such. I'll try to convert the forums database and keep all login information if possible, otherwise the forum will be wiped clean and started from scratch. Stay tuned.

Redhat 8 segfault at start?

Seems this one is biting quite the few people aswell. XMMS will segfault if ARTS isn't installed on your Redhat 8 system. Using the RPMS in the previous post will not help you as they are identical to the Redhat 8 RPMS of XMMS.

More information here [bugs.xmms.org] and here [bugzilla.redhat.com].

Redhat 8 + Can't play mp3's?

If you are using Redhat 8 and the supplied RPMS of XMMS you will find that it is not possible to load any mp3 files. Redhat was supposed to have a placeholder plugin informing you of the change, but that seems to have gone missing.
Available >> here << is some additional information and a mpg123 RPM for Redhat 8 installation of XMMS.

Hopefully, I've made myself clear on this subject, since Redhat apparently failed to get their message through.

Statement from Thomson Multimedia, mp3 Licensing

In a posting appearing Tuesday August 27, 2002 on the Web site 'slashdot.org,' an individual cited a change in the mp3 license fee structure of Thomson and Fraunhofer. The writer of the post apparently misread the mp3 licensing conditions, as Thomson's mp3 licensing policy has not experienced any change.

To clarify, since the beginning of our mp3 licensing program in 1995, Thomson has never charged a per unit royalty for freely distributed software decoders. For commercially sold decoders - primarily hardware mp3 players - the per-unit royalty has always been in place since the beginning of the program.

Therefore, there is no change in our licensing policy and we continue to believe that the royalty fees of .75 cents per mp3 player (on average selling over $200 dollars) has no measurable impact on the consumer experience.

Happy birthday XMMS/X11AMP

4 years (1461 days) ago X11AMP 0.4 was released. It's been four great years, and we all hope XMMS will be around for atleast another four years.

I've been with this project since the first release and I've seen developers come and go. Sometimes we almost thought about giving up, but all the users makes it worthwhile... although sometimes I wonder if some of you don't sit around all night and click every inch of XMMS in an evil pattern just dying to find a race condition bug just to annoy us :)

XMMS 1.2.1 is expected to be out on friday or saturday.

Fixes freeze, workaround for Solaris assembler and a workaround for a clash between kernel and libc headers on some broken linux systems.

VQF Plugin

For all of you that were wanting a VQF plugin, it's time to break out the party hats and pour yourself a big glass of milk. 1000 monkeys typing at random managed with the weird task of using the windows dll file thru WINE and wrote a xmms plugin for it. It's available on Mel Gorman's (gormo@csn.ul.ie) homepage.
